About Ponderosa Pine: Ponderosa Pine frequently exceed 500 years of age, 180 feet tall and 6 feet in diamter. A knot is the beginning of a limb inside the trunk (bole) of a tree. When a Ponderosda Pine's life is over the bole decomposes leaving only the dense knots as a testimony to the great tree's life. This decaying process can take a century to complete. The different shapes, sizes, and their density are what make these pine knots an ideal medium to carve.
